Doctor Thoughts
Some of us face medical challenges that are visibly apparent to those around us. Some challenges are less visible to the outside world, but these can be no less significant. Gary Klint faces these latter types of challenges. Many years ago, he had a horrible accident in which an ice pick went into his eye. The damage was considerable, but he received excellent treatment that “saved’ his eye.
When I first saw him as a patient about 20 years ago, he was struggling with the effects of the injury and subsequent surgeries. Many of those struggles continue today. The eye pain that Gary experiences can be debilitating, overwhelming, frustrating, and exhausting. Reading for any length of time can be near impossible. Going outdoors in bright sunlight can be painful. Sleeping can be fleeting, as the discomfort can even wake him from a sound sleep, or make falling asleep very difficult.
He has seen many specialists, has been compliant with every treatment plan, and has been a proactive patient by researching other potential treatment options on his own. What has been more remarkable than the challenges Gary has faced from this unfortunate event has been his determination, resiliency, and desire to turn this medical challenge into an opportunity to inspire and help others. Gary’s faith, intelligence, and perseverance has guided him through the years as he has sought ways to turn this apparent defeat into a victory for himself and for the others he can impact through sharing his experience. He has a remarkable support system with his wonderful wife, Angie, as well as his supportive family. I have grown to consider myself to be part of his extended family, and he has inspired me with his “never give up” attitude.
Gary Klint has a powerful message to share. He has not allowed his injury and subsequent medical challenges to define him, but rather to motivate him, for the benefit of his family, his community, and for the lives he touches.
