Surviving Chronic Pain without Meds

This blog entry and the purpose of our nonprofit is to help those suffering chronic pain and where medications don’t help or the individual chooses not to treat the pain with medications, specifically narcotics.  For myself, I fall into the first category.  I suffer from Chronic Reginal Pain Syndrome inside and behind my right eye.  This condition was a result of a traumatic ice pick injury and seven surgeries on the right eye leading to permanent nerve damage.

Suffering from chronic pain is a daily overwhelming event.  It displays one’s weakness and exhaustion but can also revel one’s perseverance.  In my case, I rely on my medical professionals, family members and friends that are willing to have me call out to them when I need someone to talk too.  Support is crucial in surviving chronic pain as this condition test your strength, mentally, physically and spiritually.  However, through survival of the day in and day out of relentless pain, one can find strength in oneself.  I have found strength in myself I never thought that I had.

I have been dealing with my chronic pain for thirty years.  Throughout my journey I have discovered strength in myself and those who care for and truly love me.  I try to always count my blessings and having those who support me are a true blessing.  Personally, I also rely on my Christian faith to help get me through those daily moments when the pain is the worst.  For those also dealing with chronic pain, my advice-develop a support system of people who will take a call from you anytime, day or night.  Talking with someone really does truly help one survive this ordeal.  In closing, if you think you are a risk to yourself or others, please give the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline a call, (800) 273-8255.
